When I began reading My Year in the Barrel, I had no idea what to expect. The description Stephen P. Scott posted on the book's Amazon page hinted that I might be in for some literary fun--it contains a reference to Joseph Conrad--and that turned out to be the case. I was laughing before I finished page three. The amusement continued, but it's not lighthearted comedy. This novel mines a rich vein of satire while inviting the reader along on a worldview-redefining journey with the very sheltered main character.Reading this was a great experience, especially since My Year in the Barrel is Scott's first novel. The characters are well-fleshed and the setting is fascinating even after you think you have grasped it in its entirety. The surprises keep coming until the very end. Not only did I enjoy reading this novel, I am looking forward to reading it again before too long. Kudos, Mr. Scott.

Healthy doses of humor, mild suspense, believable characters and a good plot make for a good book and you'll find it all here. The author is descriptive without being "wordy" allowing the reader to picture the places and events as they unfold. While not suspenseful in a "page turner" style I found myself looking forward to returning to the story to find out what crazy escapade the characters would find themselves embroiled in next. I was sorry to see this story end but will look forward to reading more from Mr. Scott in the future.
