I read Edith Jackson, along with the first book of this triology (The Friends)when I was in the 5th grade in 1986. I had forgotten many of the details and was quite taken aback when I read of the many struggles Edith endures. This heroine has strength and maturity beyond her young years, and yet she is still vulnerable to the desires incidental to youth. This book will help you to appreciate that inner strength can bring one through many trials.

Edith Jackson Rosa Guy 9780140317862 Books Reviews

I first read this book in 1983. I identified with Edith having been in foster care myself along with my siblings before being adopted at the age of 5. In some way it gave me hope I would find my biological parents, but it also prepared me for the painful reality that they still might not want me. Rosa Guy, is a phenomenal writer! I could identify with each character. I read it again as an adult, because with life experience, a different prospective & deeper understanding is almost inevitable. It was well written and even though the story is fictional, it is somebody's reality. I have to have this book in my bookcase, which is what made me search for it. I have the books The Friends & Ruby. These books are a keepsake for me!
