Top 10 London Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide DK Travel 9781465440891 Books Reviews

I love DK Eyewitness travel books and have one for every trip I take. What I especially like are the color pictures and little maps that illuminate and inform. The highlights they cover for each region, town or city are extremely interesting. There is enough information so that I am not overwhelmed, but not so much I am bored. The books are big and heavy and I do not pack them. However, when I get home, they usually help with all those "Where was I?" pictures. I find the section on shopping, hotels and restaurants a bit limited, but I don't buy the books for those sections. I usually look online or read Trip Advisor for more up-to-date recommendations and ideas.
DK Eyewitness travel guides are detailed and thorough and designed to be used before you arrive at your destination as they are very heavy to carry along on each daily adventure. They are filled with excellent and accurate pictures and helpful maps and set tours. The latest DK London guide is a delight and easy to take notes from. The restaurant, hotels, things to do and museum entrance times are all updated. If you are looking for one to take along with you, however, try their 10 ten abbreviated guide, available to every major city in Europe and most in the US.
I like DK books. Yes, sometimes more written information would be nice, but I buy these guides for the fabulous pictures, and then for the information that goes with those pictures. I think that travelers really like DK's or don't. I never carry them with me when we go because they are so heavy. But prior to leaving and upon returning, these picture guides give such a great shot at what you will see (or don't want to see) and then remind you of what you have seen. As a lover of guide books, I do like the DK guides.
I have purchased a DK Eyewitness Travel Guide for almost every International destination that I've travelled to in the last decade, and the "Eyewitness Travel" books are my preferred guide books. This one is everything I hoped for, and is already marked with many tape flags for the places we will visit during our 3 week river cruise from the South of France all the way to Normandy. At 672 pages, it is a comprehensive guide, organized by region with maps, history, places of interest and suggested tours for every region.

The book includes 1455 photographs, 80 detailed maps and 215 illustrations. Larger cathedrals and museums warrant a 2-page spread and a significant amount of detail about what you will see there. The organization by region makes sense to me, and the pages of each region are color coded to the map in the inside front cover for easy navigation. You can either read through the guide by region/location, or flip to the comprehensive 25-page index if you're looking for a specific place/attraction. The glossy paper allows a high print quality, and the font, though small is easily readable.
I read and marked this book for months before our trip. Then I carried it around London for the few days we were there. The map was incredibly accurate and the underground map was very helpful also. Great tips, thorough reviews of places, helpful info on costs for admission and food. I found this book indispensable!
I usually buy Fodors, and I did for our cruise, but I liked using the two books together. I would read Fodors, then go to DK for the pictures and maps. I'll take the DK book with me on my trip, but I think I needed both to do the planning. Neither was sufficient on its own. Fodors helped me limit the choices to what I really wanted to see, and DK helped me find it on the map and showed me pictures to help make my final decisions. Also, Fodors gave me the transportation specifics of which route or bus to use, then the DK showed me where the train station was and where it was in relation to the other attractions.
If that is London calling for you, you better rush right out and buy yourself a copy of DK's London guide. I have just finished my trip to London & Scotland, using both of the DK guides and once again, I felt they provided what I needed to take a relatively short span of time and help me to decide what the plan A (must see) and plan B (would like to see, but ok to drop if needed) items would be. In all of the guides, including this one, there is history, a description of the times to go, what the weather may be like, any festivals, etc, a breakdown by area, and my most favorite thing of all the full color, glossy drawings and pictures of the sites, including street maps, cut aways and detailed information about the most popular sites. In the back is survival info...all the things you want to know but might not want to ask. I am the planner of the trips in my family, so it is really nice to be able to put an agenda together then be able to have a good visual to show hubby to see what he thinks. I have found all of the guides to be very well done and London was no exception. I felt that I really maximized my time and I knew what to expect going there. The one area that I have to admit I don't use much is the restaurant/hotel section. I just never seem to find exactly what I want there, and go to other sources, mostly online for that piece, but overall, a really well done guide and excellent resource. If London is calling, you would be doing yourself a favor in picking up this book to help you guide your planning. It is money well spent.
