Opening The Ball The Academy Book 1 eBook Nathaniel Simpson Reviews
I was given the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a review. That being said, I really enjoyed this book! The concept for the book was amazing. Time travel to the Civil War as operatives for a secret organization...what could be better? I immediately liked the main character, Jonathon, and got drawn in to his story from the first. I especially loved reading about the gadgets the operatives were given for their trip back in time. The author did great research in to what things would have blended in to the Civil War era and came up with creative ways to alter them with futuristic technology while addressing how they would be kept secret from the people in the past. The battle the boys are caught up in is a bit intense, especially later in the book where they are describing the medical field tent where they are tending to the wounded in Civil War fashion. This may be a bit much for young readers but I think mature tweens and older would love this book. I was a bit disappointed with the author skipping over four years of the characters lives when he is training at the school. I feel like the author could have really used this to further develop the story, especially considering how short the story is (Just over 200 pages). If you like the idea of time travel, the Civil War, or just like stories of underdogs overcoming life then this is a story for you. I can't wait for the next book so that I can find out what happens to Jonathon!
OMG. Picture Xmen meets GI Joe meets Back to the Future, along with a whole lot of James Bond-like gadgets and you have this book. It is the most unique concept that I have seen in a long time. It may seem like a very odd mix, but does it ever work for this author. Not only is this a very different novel but you jump right into the action of the story from the first paragraph and it rarely lets up. This book is intense and when I got to the end I found myself wanting to grab for the sequel right then.
Nathaniel Simpson uses both metaphors and similes amazingly throughout the story. They are seamlessly inserted into the story and heighten his descriptions immensely. The backdrop of this story becomes so real that it takes no effort at all to picture yourself being dropped into this world. The author's way with words allows you do seamlessly transition from one paragraph to the next and from one chapter to its neighbour.
The characters in this novel are very well suited to their task. Some are quite well developed. You know all that you need to know about them and can guess what they might do in certain situations. Unfortunately, this does not carry over to all of the characters. Some of them are rather one sided. You never know anything about them other than what they accomplish within the storyline. One thing that I found somewhat troubling about the story actually leads back to the characters as well. I find the situations that they find themselves in very disconcerting based on their age.
All in all, however Please hand me the sequel now!
I have only one question?
When is Academy #2 getting published???? I hate when I have to wait like this.... @
This story begins with Jonathan and he is wounded. He tries to remove a bullet with the medical kit her received at the academy. Chapter changes and you think he is running towards the enemies but he really is at his school at 13 playing football. His foster dad dies and his mom tells him he must leave her home by Monday after burying her husband. When they arrive to the cemetery the driver chit chat with Jonathan. Jonathan tells him that he must leave home and go back to the system but its more likely he will run away. The driver tells him he has good luck because he works for a school called San Lorenzo Academy for gifted boy just like him. They are looking for new recruits with good physical condition to offer them a high quality education. The driver claims there is no catch so Jonathan leaves with him.
On his way to the Academy, Jonathan fells asleep without feeling tired. When he wakes up alone in a room he tries to remember how he got there. A man and a soldier get into the room and tell him he had to be drugged to avoid that he comes back to the Academy in case he fails.
Jonathan stands out from his peers and While in training Jonathan competes with another boy called Jones. Jones cheats and makes him trip to win over Jonathan and their group including them are punished. Four years have passed and they graduated from the program and they are friends now!!! Jonathan, Jones and Reilly are called by Bond who tells them they had been selected for a secret program in which they will be able to travel through time and change the past. They are sent to a farm to get proper training.
Their first mission is to go back to the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War and kill a man.During their training we witness that their division is in trouble, while Bond tells them they have to go kill a man without explaining exactly what he did, Jonathan is being dragged to a basement where someone else tells him that Bond is lying.
So they go back to the past and the three boys are worried for changing the past forever or erase themselves from their present.
This book has military background and the main character is boy. You don't necessarily have to be a man to read this book. I enjoy this type of stories because of all the suspense and action but that's just me. Reading this book depends on the readers preferences.
Opening the ball was entirely different from what I use to read.. It's not about angels or vampires or werewolves in love with humans. This book was well written by the author.
A great read! A very inexpensive entertainment book. The author makes you feel as if your there. A must read.
This was an intriguing story from start to finish. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more from this Author.
